Youth Groups: Empowering LGBTQ+ Youth in Bradford

Our partnership with Bradford Youth Service has been essential in supporting LGBTQ+ youth throughout the year. We’re committed to helping young people build the lives they want, connect with others, and find a place where they’re valued. While there is still work to be done to achieve equality, the friendships and bonds created in our centre are lasting and meaningful.

Events and Activities

This year, we held several inclusive events open to all groups, including Pride Workshops in June. These workshops encouraged creativity and self-expression, as participants explored what Pride means to them, created art and signs, and prepared for Bradford and Leeds Pride. We also covered essential topics like event safety, helping participants feel confident in larger gatherings.

Our Youth Groups

  • Phoenix: This group supports trans youth ages 11-19, providing a safe, non-judgmental space to explore gender identity. Despite challenges from anti-trans rhetoric in mainstream and social media, Phoenix remains a secure space where young people can discuss personal challenges, grow in confidence, and develop a sense of self.

  • Spectrum: For LGBTQ+ youth under 16, Spectrum offers a judgment-free environment to explore sexuality and gender among peers. We believe young people deserve a space to understand themselves without pressure. Spectrum addresses issues like bullying, self-esteem, and gender expression to build a strong foundation for personal growth.

  • Sound: Designed for LGBTQ+ youth ages 16-19, Sound provides a supportive space for young people transitioning from school to work or higher education. Weekly meetings cover topics like self-care, navigating adult life, and maintaining safety. Many attendees come from college or university, finding community and guidance among peers.

Building an Inclusive Community

Through collaboration with the Bradford Youth Service, we’ve made improvements to membership forms to be more inclusive. Now, young people can specify whether they’re out to their parents, ensuring we proceed with care when contacting home. By involving you in these changes, we’re creating a service that respects and supports each person’s unique journey.

We’re dedicated to making our community a safe, welcoming place for LGBTQ+ youth – one that fosters kindness, acceptance, and lasting support for all.
