Homophobic Hate Crime Scrutiny Panel – Mon 2nd July 5.30pm PROVISIONAL

The panel, made up from members of the public, scrutinise police investigations of crimes classified as ‘Homophobic Incidents’. Around six incidents are chosen, and all aspects of the investigation are reviewed, from initial call handling, conduct and supervision of the investigation to how the matter was finalised. The Scrutiny panel will be held at Trafalgar House Police Station at 5.30pm. Trafalgar House, Nelson Street, Bradford, BD5 0DX. Throughout June University of Bradford will be hosting the “Living My Life” exhibition, a series of photographs capturing and celebrating the individual lives of Trans people.

The exhibition is on loan from Sheffield’s Centre for HIV and Sexual Health, and is being coordinated by Equity Partnership with the support of the University and NHS Airedale, Bradford and Leeds.

Bradford LGBT Pride 2012, Sat 26th May, 1pm-7pm

A city centre celebration with the LGBT communities in Bradford. 1-7pm – Bar and market open. 1.30-6.30pm live acts on stage

Eurovision favourites SCOOCH will headline the show alongside amazing performances from drag artistes Jonathan Mayor, Sordid Secret and Bradford’s own Marigold Adams. Live music from singer-songwriter Jess Gardham, original dance music from Beauty and Pride favourite Ryan Jagger. Plus a personal appearance from Mr Gay UK, guests and surprises on the day. The time of this panel is yet to be confirmed. The panel, made up from members of the public, scrutinise police investigations of crimes classified as ‘Homophobic Incidents’. Around six incidents are chosen, and all aspects of the investigation are reviewed, from initial call handling, conduct and supervision of the investigation to how the matter was finalised. The Scrutiny panel will be held at Trafalgar House Police Station. Trafalgar House, Nelson Street, Bradford, BD5 0DX. “For most of my life, homosexuals have been depicted as psychotics, vampires, serial killers and child molesters. Lesbians and gay men were often portrayed as misfits on the verge of either suicide or emotional breakdown.

I’m grateful to Stonewall for sending me an impressive book of exciting role models for gay people. It’s been eagerly studied by several friends – a truly inspirational publication.

As a repressed teacher at the Valley School in Worksop, I hid in a very dark well locked closet in fear of being exposed, embarrassed and humiliated. In the macho, football crazy, working class, coal mining culture of North Nottinghamshire; homophobia was not just endemic, it was almost a badge of honour with some pupils and some staff. A thief, thug or murderer would be afforded more respect than a gentle, honest homosexual. After suffering several painful incidents in 1995, my position as a schoolmaster became untenable ending a 17 year career on medical advice.

Seventeen years on, I can now identify with a real role model. Openly gay head teacher Liam Nolan has transformed a failing inner city Birmingham comprehensive and doubled the GCSE pass rate. Despite his sexual orientation, he is well respected by parents and pupils. The staff feel ‘empowered and inspired’. In 2011, the Times Educational Supplement named Perry Beeches ‘Overall Outstanding National School of the Year’. Mr Nolan’s brave example is a beacon of hope for all future teachers who share same-sex attraction.”

Dear Friends, once again Bradford Pride is almost upon us and I am writing to ask that you volunteer on the day to make sure that the proceedings go well. The event takes a lot of work to organize and most of that has already been done. However, another important job is to make sure that the actual day runs smoothly and that everyone gets the maximum enjoyment from this unique happening. We need you to take on that role on the 26th May.

Volunteering as a steward will make the day even more rewarding knowing that you are contributing to the success of such a powerful celebration of LGBT life. IDAHO Day 2012

Equity Partnership will be holding an evening event to commemorate International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia, this year at the Midland Hotel, Bradford.

IDAHO Day falls each year on 17th May, the date in 1990 when the World Health Organisation finally removed homosexuality from its International Classification of Disease. Equity Partnership has been working with each of our local NHS Trusts to help in their work with Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual communities and we welcome the positive action that all four Trusts have taken this year. In particular the fact that each has signed a positive “LGB mental health statement”.

We congratulate the local NHS Trusts for their forward thinking proactive approach, and the work their doing to raise awareness amongst their own staff.

Things are shaping up well for Bradford Pride 2012. The details are as follows:

Bradford Pride, Saturday 26th May 2012. It will be a city centre celebration with the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans communities of Bradford.

The whole event kicks off at 1pm, ending at 7pm for the bar and market stalls.

Between 1.30-6.30pm live acts will be on stage including headliners SCOOCH, alongside amazing performances from drag artistes Jonathan Mayor, Sordid Secret and Bradford’s own Marigold Adams,live music from singer-songwriter Jess Gardham, original dance music from Beauty and Pride favourite Ryan Jagger.

There will be a personal appearance from Mr Gay UK, guests and more surprises on the day (Programme may be subject to changes).

Bradford Pride welcomes everyone to join in the celebrations. Get your face painted, enjoy some food, drink or ice-cream, and check out the colourful market stalls.

A Trans Journey with Guardian Columnist Juliet Jacques, Tues 28th Feb, 6.30pm

Juliet Jacques will talk about how she saw trans people and culture addressed by the media during the last two decades, and how she discovered a wealth of academic and activist writing that remained unrepresented in the mainstream. Discussing how she combined traditional transsexual autobiographies with counter-cultural theory for the Guardian’s Transgender Journey, she will cover how her writing aimed to challenge ‘radical’ feminist and conservative conceptions about transsexual people and gender roles, and this helped to affect editorial policy at a newspaper with a complicated record on trans issues.

Juliet is the author of The Guardian’s Transgender Journey column, the first to document the gender reassignment process for a major mainstream newspaper, which was longlisted for this year’s Orwell Prize for blogs. As well as writing on trans issues for The New Statesman, TimeOut London and other publications, she also covers experimental film, European literature, music and sport. She has also been involved in activist work dealing with homophobia in football and transphobia in the media, speaking at EHRC workshops and Pride events about mainstream print and press portrayals of trans people.

Consultation on LGBT Resource Centre in Leeds, 27th Feb, 4pm-7pm

There is going to be a consultation event in Leeds on 27th February, to ask people what they would want from an LGBT Centre in Leeds and to see whether there are any lovely volunteers that would be interested in forming a steering group that could take this project forward.
