Around six incidents are chosen, and all aspects of the investigation are reviewed, from initial call handling, conduct and supervision of the investigation to how the matter was finalised. The Scrutiny panel will be held at Trafalgar House Police Station at 5.30pm. Trafalgar House, Nelson Street, Bradford, BD5 0DX. International Women’s Day 2012 and Bradford Woman of the Year Awards

This year Bradford and District Women’s Forum are proud to be hosting their annual International Women’s Day event and also to be partners in the new Bradford Woman of the Year Awards.

The International Women’s Day 2012 event will be taking place on Saturday 10th March at Forster Community College from 2:30-4:30pm.

This event is for women only and is open to all women and will be attended by the Lord Mayor. There will be a presentation of a “Year in the Life of Brilliant Bradford Women”.

James Nash – Six week creative writing course for everyone, starting 3rd March

Taking place weekly on a Thursday evening between 7pm-9pm, James will be running six weeks of taster writing workshops including poetry, short fiction, memoir, writing from life and more. The course will include chances to share work and get feedback. James can also give advice on publishing and performance possibilities for those who might be interested.

A Trans Journey with Guardian Columnist Juliet Jacques, Tues 28th Feb, 6.30pm

Juliet Jacques will talk about how she saw trans people and culture addressed by the media during the last two decades, and how she discovered a wealth of academic and activist writing that remained unrepresented in the mainstream. Discussing how she combined traditional transsexual autobiographies with counter-cultural theory for the Guardian’s Transgender Journey, she will cover how her writing aimed to challenge ‘radical’ feminist and conservative conceptions about transsexual people and gender roles, and this helped to affect editorial policy at a newspaper with a complicated record on trans issues.

Juliet is the author of The Guardian’s Transgender Journey column, the first to document the gender reassignment process for a major mainstream newspaper, which was longlisted for this year’s Orwell Prize for blogs. As well as writing on trans issues for The New Statesman, TimeOut London and other publications, she also covers experimental film, European literature, music and sport. She has also been involved in activist work dealing with homophobia in football and transphobia in the media, speaking at EHRC workshops and Pride events about mainstream print and press portrayals of trans people.

Consultation on LGBT Resource Centre in Leeds, 27th Feb, 4pm-7pm

There is going to be a consultation event in Leeds on 27th February, to ask people what they would want from an LGBT Centre in Leeds and to see whether there are any lovely volunteers that would be interested in forming a steering group that could take this project forward.

A glitzy ‘bubbly’ evening event in the French Ballroom at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, for the presentation of the fourth Equity Partnership LGB & T Awards 2012. Our celebrity hosts will be singer-songwriter and pianist Belinda O’Hooley and Yorkshire-born author Paul Burston (‘Shameless’, ‘Star People’, ‘Lovers & Losers’ and ’The Gay Divorcee’). On hand to entertain you all will be Stand-up comic, presenter, actor, and writer Shelley Cooper and singer-songwriter Jess Gardham.

Saturday 18^thFebruary in the Equity Centre. Women Only Event. Working together the Lesbian Identity Project and the Equity Partnership, would like to invite you to ‘A Talk with Sarah Ponsonby’.

A unique opportunity to ‘meet’ one of the remarkable 18th Century Ladies of Llangollen from Wales. In 1778 two courageous women gave ‘Romantic Friendship’ a new meaning when they eloped from their homes in Ireland and eventually settled in North Wales, where they remained together for almost 50 years. They were Sarah Ponsonby and Eleanor Butler and they became known and admired as the Ladies of Llangollen. Sarah will bring along her box of treasured keepsakes for everyone to see. A delightful event with Clare Wall who is regularly involved in costume presentations about the Ladies of Llangollen at Plas Newydd Museum and is author of an article about Sarah and Eleanor published by Herstoria in 2010.

We know that disabled LGBT people in particular can feel socially isolated, and that we can become stronger through sharing our ideas and experiences. The Equity Partnership is committed to increasing access and opportunities for LGBT people with disabilities and we’re pleased to report that with our support, the LGBT Disability Network is once again meeting regularly thanks to the generosity of volunteers willing to give their time to help it succeed.

Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January, 11am

This will be a community event held in the presence of the Lord Mayor. It will include contributions from local schools, music and a candle lighting ceremony to commemorate the different communities who were victims of the holocaust and modern day genocides.

Homophobic Hate Crime Scrutiny Panel

The panel scrutinise police approaches to investigating crimes classified as ‘Homophobic Incidents’. To do this, six incidents are chosen, and all aspects of the investigation are reviewed, from initial call handling, conduct and supervision of the investigation to how the matter was finalised. This year’s categories are

1. Most LGB&T Friendly Organisation

This award is for any organisation in Bradford & District that you feel has worked most effectively to make itself LGB&T friendly; who is trying hard to find ways to make access easier and make their services more appropriate. This is not for organisations run by and for LGB&T people; this is for mainstream organisations who’ve demonstrated that they’re serious about understanding and meeting our needs. Please give your reasons.

2. Most dynamic LGB&T Champion – Sponsored by the Midland Hotel, Bradford

This Award is for any individual who has worked passionately and effectively to champion the rights and interests of LGB&T people in Bradford & District. This person might not identify as LGB&T but has proved themselves to be very LGB&T friendly! Please give your reasons.

3. Best LGB&T Group

This Award is for any LGB&T group in Bradford & District you feel works extremely well to fulfil its purpose. They could be nominated because of the benefit they bring to their own members, perhaps through social or practical activities for example, or because of the work they do as a group for the benefit of others. This is not for large LGB&T organisations (for example, Equity Partnership, Yorkshire Mesmac) or any profit making organisation. This is for smaller groups, particularly those that have no paid staff. Please give your reasons.

4. Best LGB&T Volunteer

This Award is for any unpaid volunteer involved in any LGB&T group in Bradford & District, who has gone ‘the extra mile’ and worked hard to ensure that their group/organisation, or a certain aspect of it, runs effectively and smoothly. Please give your reasons.

5. RSO Group (University of Bradford) Award for Most Inspiring Individual in the Yorkshire & Humber Region

This category is for any LGB&T individual who you feel has been an inspiration, working somewhere in the region. They might be inspiring because of their own personal strength, the positive light they’ve shone on LGB&T people, their determination or just their sheer charisma! Please give your reasons.

Wayward Women was set up in Leeds in 1995 as a lesbian walking group for most ages. Walks range from 7 – 12 miles, generally in the West Yorkshire dales and moors but also in North or South Yorkshire – occasionally even in Lancashire. All walks are on Sundays, usually every two weeks, and most are circular. Walks leave the start point at 10.30am, so do be on time, or you may get left behind!

Wayward Women is an informal, voluntary group, and each woman joining a walk is expected to take responsibility for her own safety, equipment and fitness. Check with walk leaders in advance if you are not sure of your physical ability to undertake a particular route, and inform them of any problems you may have on the day.

Women are advised to wear proper walking boots and carry an extra layer of clothing for warmth. A full set of waterproofs, hat and gloves should be brought, even when walks are moderate – weather on hills can change rapidly. Please say if there is something you need as someone else may be able to help. You should also bring a packed lunch, including water or other liquid.

For your own safety, and that of the group, group leaders reserve the right to refuse to take any woman who is inadequately dressed or equipped. Well-behaved dogs with responsible owners are welcome on appropriate walks, but both are accountable to the rest of the group, particularly at lunch stops.

Saturday 18^thFebruary in the Equity Centre. Women Only Event. Working together the Lesbian Identity Project and the Equity Partnership, would like to invitee you to ‘A Talk with Sarah Ponsonby’. A unique opportunity to ‘meet’ one of the remarkable 18^th Century Ladies of Llangollen from Wales. In 1778 two courageous women gave ‘Romantic Friendship’ a new meaning when they eloped from their homes in Ireland and eventually settled in North Wales, where they remained together for almost 50 years. They were Sarah Ponsonby and Eleanor Butler and they became known and admired as the Ladies of Llangollen. Sarah will bring along her box of treasured keepsakes for everyone to see. A delightful event with Clare Wall who is regularly involved in costume presentations about the Ladies of Llangollen at Plas Newydd Museum and is author of an article about Sarah and Eleanor published by Herstoria in 2010.

Saturday 25^th Equity Partnership LGB&T Awards. A glitzy ‘bubbly’ event in the French Ballroom at the Midland Hotel, Bradford, for the presentation of the fourth Equity Partnership LGB&T Awards 2012. Our celebrity hosts will be singer-songwriter and pianist Belinda O’Hooleyand Yorkshire-born author Paul Burston – ‘Shameless’, ‘Star People’, ‘Lovers & Losers’ and ’The Gay Divorcee’. On hand to entertain you all will be Stand-up comic, presenter, actor, & writer Shelley Cooper and singer-songwriter Jess Gardham.

Bradford City Football Club – Sat 10th Dec, help hand out anti homophobia leaflets

On Saturday, 10th December, there will be a leafleting of Bradford City Football Club, from 12:30pm onwards with anti-homophobia leaflets, prior to their match against Plymouth Argyle. The leaflets have been produced by the Communication Workers Union, and the event is supported by the TUC. This will be the first club to agree to having the leaflets distributed and this day of action has been sanctioned by the Football League.

Before the match begins, on the pitch, there will be a formal signing of the Government’s Charter against Homophobia in Sport. Bradford City being the third club to have agreed to sign the Charter. Also, in recognition of Bradford City’s efforts to begin tackling the issues of homophobia that occur, they will be presented with an award from “Just a ball game?”. Future of the Equity Partnership – members consultation, 22nd November

A vital part of this work is to understand from members what they feel are the important things the Equity Partnership does and provides for LGB communities in Bradford and the surrounding area, and if there are areas where the organisation could be doing more work.
